Katrina Schaman

Katrina Schaman is a Canadian painter from Toronto, Ontario. Born in Kitchener in 1982, Katrina has always felt a great desire to create. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours from Queen's University and currently works from a private studio in Toronto.

Katrina grew up admiring and drawing inspiration from many of Canada's traditional landscape artists and over time she has developed her own unique style, using different combinations of acrylic paint, graphite, spray paint, hand-cut textured paper and gold leaf. She described her work as 'Canadian art with a whimsical twist'.

Katrina’s landscape and animal paintings celebrate the deep underlying relationship between abstract and real forms. Always enjoying preliminary sketches and drawings Katrina has set out to create work that balances the free movement and simplicity of a graphite drawing with the rich colour and intricacies of paint and other medium. She puts extra effort into the final accents and details on all her pieces because she hopes these intricacies will add to the feeling of whimsy and magic for the viewer. Katrina also has a unique method for developing her prints - she uses scans and photos of her past work and manipulates them into new original designs by digitally cutting, layering and detailing them.

Katrina strives to create work that will change and grow for a viewer - whether it's the first or hundredth time they see it, the artist hopes that people will continue discovering new forms, feelings and ideas within her work.
